John Heckman:  Get the Word Out: Social Media as a Tool for Historians.

For far too long, historians, historical groups, and historical sites have not harnessed the power of social media in the most beneficial way.  How do we reach a new demographic?  How can we get more people to come to a new exhibit?  What can we do to increase awareness of a preservation effort?  How can we get more people to our event?  The digital environment field is open for the taking if we can only take the time to use it.  This presentation will focus on key applications and platforms which have been helping to change the landscape of the history field.


John Heckman is known to online audiences as "The Tattooed Historian."  While he worked alongside the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers as an archivist and historian, John started his brand to reach new audiences in up-to-date ways.  What once was a simple online project has now turned into a multi-platform digital footprint, helping to bring history to younger demographics.

John holds a Master's Degree in History from Sheppensburg University of Pennsylvania, and has been a historical interpreter for over 25 years.  He has conducted programming alongside the U.S. National Park Service, the U.S. Army, the Boy Scouts of America, and has performed hundreds of school programs in the United States.
