Despite later portrayals of the corset as a painful symbol of female repression, in its day it was only a piece of underclothing. An exploration of the myths, truths, and nuances of the corset in the Regency and beyond.

Cassidy Percoco is the author of Regency Women’s Dress: Techniques and Patterns 1800-1830 and the upcoming Eighteenth Century Women’s Dress. She holds an M.A. in Fashion and Textile History, Theory, and Museum Practice from FIT, and is the collections manger at the Fenimore Art Museum and Fenimore Farm & Country Village.
