Bringing the Names Carved in Stone Back to Life

Every Great War soldier has a story. However, most are forgotten with only their names carved into a stone grave-markers or engraved on a war memorials left to remember who they were. Mark has spent his the past 15 years deeply researching the lives and war records of ordinary soldiers and officers with the aim of telling their hidden stories. In this presentation, Mark will highlight some of the more than 150 mini-biographies he has written while demonstrating the importance of why Canadians should seek to uncover and tell their own family’s Great War past. From Canada’s most famous battles, like Vimy, Passchendaele or Amiens, to our greatest airmen to the vast number who suffered from shell shock, with drama, flair and finesse, Mark seeks to tell Canada’s Great War history through the lives of every individual who went into battle with a Maple Leaf on their shoulder.
Mark Carmichael is the owner, writer and researcher of the 116th Battalion CEF Facebook Group, owner, writer of the Heroes of the Great War Substack page and author, producer, and orator of the Heroes of the Great War podcast. He is also the Social Media Manager for the Central Ontario Branch of the Western Front Association and contributing writer for their magazine,The Maple Leaf….in the evenings and on weekends. His days are leading a team of sales professionals where he proudly boasts a 32 long career in the Canadian Telecommunications Industry sector. Mark and his spouse and partner Nicola are the parents of three children. Mark a BA(Hons) in History from the University of Western Ontario and continues to be a passionate Canadian historian with a keen interest in both military history and the human impacts that war and warfare have on both individuals and the societies which called upon them to serve and to sacrifice in their cause.
